Overcoming Struggles & Persevering Through Crisis

In times like this, the importance of human resource management has never been greater.  As COVID-19 continues to disrupt our lives and workplaces, we're faced with daily challenges and struggles.

Scholarship Opportunities

The Michiana Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management has established three scholarships to help finance higher education for the children of our members, as well as members of the local student chapters of SHRM. Additionally, we offer a scholarship for members who wish to achieve SHRM-CP or SCP designation. Each of these scholarships is given without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, disability, national origin or any other protected group.

The Scholarship for Sons & Daughters of Chapter Members and The Scholarship for Student Chapter Members

Applicants may be either high school seniors, high school graduates or first-year college undergraduates enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time course of study at a college or university. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or better and be pursuing a degree or planning to pursue a degree with an emphasis area in HR or an HR-related program (such as business, psychology or labor relations). Active SHRM Student Chapter Members will be given preference.

Each scholarship recepient will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Only one Sons & Daughters and one Student Chapter scholarship will be awarded annually.

Michiana SHRM Certification Scholarship Program

This scholarship is for those interested in becoming a SHRM SPHR or PHR certified professional. It was created to honor the memory of board volunteer and long-time Michiana SHRM member Alison Fox, who passed away in 2017.  It is designed for active members of Michiana SHRM to help cover the cost of SHRM certification. This scholarship will apply for those wanting to be newly certified or professionals who are recertifying.  Members will be able to apply the scholarship to purchasing books, attending Michiana SHRM certification study group, IUSB certification class, and the examination fees.  Scholarship recipient(s) will receive a nominal amount to cover certification cost request not to exceed a $1,000 scholarship.  Scholarship(s) are awarded annually.

Step 2: Add your chapter when you join or renew your SHRM national membership and select the dual membership option when prompted. It's that simple!


Already a SHRM Member? Visit your MySHRM profile, choose Michiana SHRM under Chapter Association and continue to the cart to process your transaction


UPDATE: SHRM Certification Spring Testing Window is Now June 1, 2020 – August 15, 2020

SHRM Certification (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP) spring exam Early Bird (savings of $75) applications will be accepted through April 10, then with a standard deadline price (including nonrefundable $75 standard deadline fee) for applications between April 11 and May 15 for the UPDATED June 1, 2020 – August 15, 2020 testing window.

SHRM Foundation is offering two great opportuninties to grow your HR knowledge and development.  

Employing Abilities at Work Certificate is a FREE educational program to learn how to hire, retain, and advance employees with disabilities- worth 10 PDCS.

Created for HR professionals, this new education program from the SHRM Foundation will focus on best practices to attract, hire, and retain veterans. Participants will earn a Certificate after completing a multi-faceted program that includes:

  • Content review
  • Online training
  • Brief quizzes
  • Pre- and post-participation surveys
  • Earn 10 PDCS


The City of South Bend and Goodwill Industries of Michiana, along with several other regional partners, announce the launch of the Jobs Progress initiative, aimed at connecting community members facing unemployment or reduced hours with employers who are hiring in the region.

The online portal – www.jobsprogress.com – launched Friday, May 1, 2020. The site is intended to provide up-to-date listings of employers in the greater South Bend region who are hiring. Employers listed are located within roughly 35 miles of South Bend, meet criteria for essential businesses allowed to be open, and are actively hiring. The site will also allow employers to describe the COVID-19-related safety and precautionary measures they are taking.

“We know that the coronavirus pandemic has impacted workers and families in our region, many of whom face uncertainty about if or when they can return to work,” said Mayor James Mueller. “During these tough economic conditions there are employers actively hiring, and there will be more as the economy re-opens. This initiative is about helping our community find work more easily, now and into our recovery.”

Employers who are hiring are encouraged to submit their job listings on the portal. Job seekers can search and filter for jobs from a list of over 140 employers who are already listed as hiring.

"Goodwill's mission to empower our community through education, training and job placement fits perfectly with this initiative." said Debie Coble, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Michiana.  "We are pleased to partner with the City as we re-open businesses throughout Michiana."

In addition to the City and Goodwill, other regional partners including WorkOne Northern Indiana, the South Bend Regional Chamber, Ivy Tech Community College, and the South Bend Elkhart Regional Partnership are assisting in promoting and supporting the initiative.

The City has partnered with Yext, a New York-based technology provider that is developing the platform pro bono.

Virtual Data Science & Information Security Training by Ivy Tech

The IT Sector Partnership is offering Data Science and Information Security training in June 2020 through a 1-year Technical Certificate program. The certificate can be acquired by pursuing a series of courses occurring every Saturday at Ivy Tech. The classes will have an option of live streaming in June 2020 if the Coronavirus Pandemic prolongs. We will also assist with financial aid, job search, self-learning, and wrap-around services during the training. Michiana SHRM’s April Diversity and Inclusion Summit has been postponed until further notice. We plan to reschedule this event later in the year and will keep you posted on the new date.

Michiana SHRM’s Study Group Goes Virtual

In the wake of social distancing and the closure of local colleges, the Michiana SHRM study group has moved it’s group to an online virtual meeting. We are grateful to be able to offer this option and a huge thank you to Linda Krueger, our Certification Director for continuing to help our study group to pass that test!

To better serve students during this period of uncertainty, SHRM has adjusted the dates of the spring testing and application windows. If your students have already scheduled an appointment in this test window, SHRM will reach out to them directly with instructions to reschedule

The spring testing window to take the exam has shifted to June 1 – August 15

The early-bird application deadline has been extended through Friday, April 1

The standard application deadline has been extended through Friday, May 15.

Effective June 1, SHRM will offer a remote proctoring option, which provides an opportunity to test from home. Check the website soon for full details, geographic restrictions apply.

How to File Unemployment in Indiana if your job is affected by COVID-19


 President Trump signed H.R. 6201 into law. It amends the FMLA to require a new form of family leave, and it adds a law requiring paid sick leave. Both laws apply to employers of fewer than 500 employees, will take effect by April 2, and will expire on December 31, 2020
